PPR Aluminum-Plastic Composite Pipe

PPR Aluminum-Plastic Composite Pipe is a multi-layer pipe that sandwiches a welded aluminum layer between two layers of polypropylene random copolymer, combining the properties of both plastic and metal pipe in a single product. The inner and outer PPR layers give the pipe the same general handling and jointing characteristics as standard PPR pipe, while the embedded aluminum layer changes how the pipe behaves under temperature changes and over time.
The aluminum layer generally reduces the pipe's linear thermal expansion compared with standard PPR pipe of the same diameter, which can help limit movement, noise, or stress at fittings and pipe supports as the system heats and cools. The metal layer can also act as a barrier to oxygen diffusion through the pipe wall, which is relevant in closed-loop heating systems, where oxygen entering the water can contribute to corrosion of metal components elsewhere in the system, such as boilers or radiators. This pipe is generally designed to connect using the same PPR fusion and brass insert fittings used with standard PPR pipe, though installers should confirm the specific fusion procedure recommended for the composite pipe wall.

Application Scenarios & Installation

This pipe is typically used in hot and cold water supply lines, central heating circuits, radiator systems, and underfloor heating installations, where the reduced thermal expansion and oxygen barrier properties are more relevant than in simple cold-water-only plumbing. It is commonly specified in residential and commercial buildings with hydronic heating systems, where minimizing oxygen ingress into a closed loop is a design consideration.
Because the aluminum layer changes the pipe's fusion characteristics slightly compared with standard PPR pipe, installation generally follows the pipe manufacturer's specific fusion welding guidance for composite pipe, which may differ in minor ways from the process used for plain PPR pipe. Specifiers should confirm the pipe's actual pressure and temperature ratings, along with compatible fitting types, against the manufacturer's current documentation before finalizing a system design.
